Factory Acceptance Testing for Export Transformers: What Buyers Should Insist On Before Shipment

2026-10-13

When you are importing transformers from overseas, the factory acceptance test (FAT) is your last line of defense before the equipment leaves the manufacturer's floor. A disciplined, witnessed FAT is non-negotiable for any project where downtime is unacceptable.

Why FAT Matters for Export Projects

Before a power transformer leaves the factory, OEMs and buyers should witness a defined FAT sequence that proves insulation strength, loss performance, mechanical integrity, and protection functions under real operating stress. Missing a critical dielectric or SFRA check has led to multi-million-dollar site delays.

The Essential FAT Test Matrix

For export transformers rated 110–220 kV, the minimum witnessed test set should include:

Test Item Why Buyers Witness It

Ratio & Vector Group Confirms system compatibility and polarity

Winding Resistance Detects poor joints, open/short in windings

Insulation Resistance Baseline for insulation and moisture

Induced Overvoltage (DVDF) Stresses insulation at double frequency/voltage

Applied Voltage (AV) Checks line-to-ground insulation withstand

Short-Circuit Impedance & Losses Confirms losses versus guaranteed performance

Temperature Rise (Type Test) Verifies cooling design and hotspot limits

SFRA (≥ 72.5 kV) Detects core/winding movement, transport robustness

Partial Discharge (≥ 72.5 kV) Early warning of insulation defects

DGA (Oil Sampling) Oil quality and incipient faults

IEC vs. IEEE: Which Standard Applies?

For a factory looking to export globally, mastering both IEC 60076 and IEEE C57 standards is essential for OEM and custom production to ensure compliance with diverse regional power grids. The key practical differences:

IEC 60076-1 specifies a strict tolerance of ±0.5% of the nameplate ratio for the principal tapping

IEEE C57.12.00 uses similar tolerance values but with different testing protocols

China-based factories offer competitive pricing, advanced manufacturing technologies, and flexibility to produce custom designs that comply with both standards

How Hualai Manages FAT for Export Orders

At Jiangsu Hualai Electric Technology Co., Ltd., every transformer undergoes a comprehensive FAT before shipment. Our testing protocol includes:

Routine tests on every unit: ratio and vector group verification, winding resistance, insulation resistance, applied voltage test, and short-circuit impedance and loss measurement

Type tests on representative units: temperature rise test and lightning impulse test per IEC 60076-4

Special tests available on request: SFRA, partial discharge, and dissolved gas analysis

We provide complete test reports with each shipment, and welcome customer-witnessed FAT at our facility in Jiangsu. For Philippine project bidding and site acceptance, we maintain full type test reports and official laboratory inspection documentation.
