Egypt's Power Grid Is in the Middle of a Historic Expansion — Here's What It Means for Transformer Procurement in 2026–2027

2026-10-14

Egypt is undergoing one of the most aggressive power infrastructure buildouts in the Middle East and North Africa, and transformer demand is surging accordingly.

The Investment Pipeline

The Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) plans to invest EGP 36.8 billion (approximately USD 722.4 million) in the fiscal year 2026/2027 to improve national grid performance. Of the planned investments, 45.96% will be allocated to completing ongoing projects, while 54.04% will be directed toward new projects, replacement works, and regional control system development.

Major procurement activity is already underway. In October 2026, EETC signed a contract to supply, install, and test three 175 MVA transformers for the Sadat Main and Tahrir Badr substations, each rated at 11/66/220 kV. In December 2025, EETC signed a contract for the supply, installation supervision, and testing of 51 transformers rated 11–66 kV, 40 MVA, serving electricity zones across Cairo, Canal, Alexandria, West Delta, Middle Egypt, Upper Egypt, and Delta regions — all in preparation for summer 2026 peak loads.

What's Driving the Demand

The Egypt Power Transformer Market is projected to grow from 11.83% in 2025 to 17.07% by 2029, driven by rapid expansion of electricity generation and distribution networks, modernization of power plants, and the push for renewable energy sources including solar and wind. The broader Egypt Transformer Market is projected to register a growth rate of 4.7% during 2024–2030.

Egypt's energy strategy aims to raise renewable energy's share of the energy mix to over 42% by 2030 and 65% by 2040, creating a sizeable market and strong demand for electrical equipment.
