Oil-Immersed Transformers — The Specification That Matters Most Is Not kVA

2026-10-29

Oil-immersed transformers remain the backbone of distribution and industrial power. But the most consequential specification decision is rarely the one that dominates early conversations. Buyers tend to fixate on capacity and price per kVA. The variables that actually determine twenty-year cost and reliability sit elsewhere: loss tier, core material, vector group, and impedance coordination with the rest of the substation.

Loss tier is a procurement decision, not a catalogue attribute

IEC 60076-20 defines energy performance tiers for oil-immersed transformers. Before inviting bids, the buyer must decide whether the project follows IEC 60076-20 tiers, EU Ecodesign limits, or owner-specific loss caps — and state that choice explicitly in the RFQ.The reason is practical: a transformer that meets a lower loss tier will quote differently, and more importantly, will cost differently over its service life. No-load loss runs 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, whether the transformer is loaded or not. Load loss scales with the square of current. Comparing quotes without normalizing both loss figures to a guaranteed maximum at a stated reference temperature is comparing incomplete numbers.

Core material follows the duty cycle, not a preference

CRGO step-lap cores and amorphous alloy cores are both legitimate choices, but they serve different load profiles. Amorphous cores cut no-load losses substantially, which rewards applications where the transformer is energized continuously but loaded intermittently. CRGO remains mechanically robust and economically competitive for high-load, high-capacity duty. The wrong question is “which is better.” The right question is: what does the load curve look like, and where does this transformer sit on it?

Vector group and impedance are system decisions hiding inside a transformer order

A 6–10 kV oil-immersed transformer is not selected from kVA alone. Vector group (Dyn11, Yyn0, Yzn11) determines phase displacement, neutral behaviour, and harmonic path — and a mismatch can block parallel operation even when voltage and capacity appear identical.Impedance governs prospective fault current and voltage regulation; a 4% versus 5% impedance difference can materially change breaker duty and protection settings downstream. These are not transformer-isolated details. They are substation coordination requirements, and they belong in the specification before the factory builds anything.

Where the factory matters

Oil-immersed transformers are where the gap between a trading intermediary and a source factory becomes most visible. Core steel grade, winding material, tank construction, oil processing, and routine testing all happen inside a factory — and the party relaying your RFQ is not the party controlling those variables.

Jiangsu Hualai Electric is a source factory integrating R&D, production, inspection, and sales. Oil-immersed transformer specifications — loss guarantees, vector group, impedance, tap range — are clarified directly with the people who own the production line, not a sales layer between you and the factory. Factory-direct means the technical conversation ends in an engineering decision, not a relayed message.
