Egypt's Solar Energy Boom Is Creating a Massive Market for Step-Up Transformers

2026-10-14

Egypt's renewable energy buildout is reshaping the country's transformer demand landscape — and step-up transformers are at the center of it.

The Mega Projects

Norwegian renewable energy firm Scatec is planning to develop a 500-kilovolt electricity transformer station in Samalut, Minya governorate, alongside a high-voltage transmission line extending approximately 70 kilometers. The project involves total investments of EGP 5 billion (USD 94.5 million) and is intended to support the transfer of electricity generated from solar energy projects in southern Egypt. The transformer station and transmission line will connect renewable energy projects with a combined generation capacity of up to 1,700 MW, as well as battery energy storage systems with a capacity of 4,000 MWh.

In June 2026, the 500 kV substation at the Abydos Solar PV and Energy Storage Project – Phase II successfully completed reverse power transmission on the first attempt, marking a major milestone for what is the largest integrated solar-storage project under construction in Africa. This project includes a 1,000 MW photovoltaic facility and a 600 MWh energy storage system, with a 500 kV booster station as core infrastructure.

Additionally, a mega solar project in Minya governorate — “Valley Sustainable Energy – Energy Valley” — comprises 1.7 GW of solar photovoltaic capacity, along with new transformer stations and dedicated power transmission lines supplying clean energy to the Wadi Al-Siririya industrial zone.

The Transformer Opportunity

These projects require a specific class of transformers: high-capacity step-up transformers that can efficiently raise the voltage from solar inverter output to 220 kV or 500 kV for grid transmission. They also require auxiliary and station service transformers for substation operations, and earthing transformers for system grounding.

For solar farms in Egypt's desert environment — such as the Abydos project in Aswan province — transformers must be engineered to withstand extreme heat, dust, and temperature fluctuations. High-ambient designs rated for 50°C or above, sealed tank construction to prevent dust ingress, and enhanced cooling systems are essential specifications.
